One of Feuerman’s hyper-realistic sculptures exhibited in Bel-Air Fine Art in Venice.

I currently am spending some days on my own in Venice, Italy.

I really missed traveling solo, and I was looking forward to visiting museums at my own pace. Nonetheless, I am on a pretty tight schedule: I got a pass that grants access to dozens of museums and churches, however, my time is limited.

This morning I met a former colleague for a quick breakfast before they started their shift in a place by Rialto Bridge. Needless to say, my Venetian orienteering skills are kind of rusty, and I got lost. And I am very glad I did get lost since I bumped into an incredible original piece by Carole Feuerman on open display in the garden of an art gallery — Bel-air Fine Art (in Calle dello Spezier, 2765, 30124 Venezia VE). You can read more about the artist on their website:

Carole A. Feuerman (born 1945) is an American sculptor and author working in Hyperrealism. She is one of the three artists [the other two being Hanson and De Andrea] credited with starting the movement in the late 1970s. She is best known for her iconic figurative works of swimmers and dancers. She is the only artist to make life-like outdoor sculptures and the only woman to sculpt in this style. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery — Smithsonian Institution; the State Hermitage Museum; the Venice Biennale; Galleria d’Arte Moderna; Palazzo Strozzi Palace and Palazzo Reale in Milan.

Art historian John T. Spike dubbed Feuerman “the reigning doyenne of super-’realism’”, solidifying her place in art history.

The artwork I had the pleasure to see up-close today is an oil-on resin sculpture. If it wasn’t for the size, it would be a perfect replica of a woman relaxing presumably in a swimming pool. These pictures were taken on a rainy day, and it was impossible to discern which drops were rain, and which were part of the sculpture.

I hope you will enjoy these as much as I did!
